JOTA Report
Kiwi North Live Day Sunday 18th October 2026
Our Clubrooms were open to welcome scouts participating in Jamboree on the air or JOTA. This is an annual event. The Hora Hora Scout Group brought about 40 of their members along to enjoy various park activities. They were accompanied by leaders and parent helpers so the clubrooms were quite crowded at times. The basic plan was to allow contacts with similar groups outside our area. Hf radio contacts are hard to come by during daylight hours but Paul ZL1PC managed to find a scout group in Nelson which allowed a few of the scouts to have 40m SSB chats. The club Icom 7300 was moved into the main room to allow maximum exposure. Paul ZL1XUT set up a Vhf station near the main gate using his ute as a base. Thanks to Bob ZL1VJ for anchoring Vhf exchanges and helping shy young people to carry a conversation.
Aaron ZL1AUN and his son, Will, set up a Star Link wifi station which allowed three laptops to connect to SDR stations. The students were clearly impressed with the coloured waterfalls and variety of radio signals encountered. They seemed to find morse code signals interesting too. The club audio cw oscillator was kept busy once it was discovered on a side bench.
Next year there is going to be a Jamboree on Barge Park so the Club will offer radio activity in the late afternoon early evening when conditions are more suitable. It will be possible to contact the many Aussie Scout groups that were active.
Present at the Clubrooms:
Paul Zl1PC, XYL Maureen, Aaron ZL1AUN and son, Tim ZL1MZR, Paul ZL1XUT, Allan ZL1AW, Barbara ZL1TPJ and Mark ZL1DO. Bob ZL1VJ was a home station. Thanks to everyone who helped make the day a success.
Allan ZL1AW.

Scouts could tune in to Hams having technical chats and doing hard-core contesting. Practice your tuning skills at:
"List of KiwiSDRs" http://rx.linkfanel.net/snr.html
If one kiwSDR is quiet, try a different
"Ham Band" https://www.ailunce.com/blog/ham-radio-frequencies-guide-bands-chart-emergency-freqs
or try a kiwiSDR in a different continent! Somewhere in the world, the sun is always making the sky sparkle for HF radio waves to bounce around. Best to choose LSB for 80m and 40m, USB for shorter wavelengths
